During the 15th and the 16th century of Renaissance Art period, business flourished in Italy and people gained wealth. These rich families started patronizing the artists. With the new found financial support and freedom, there was a drastic change in the behavior and thinking of the artists. They rejected the medieval art emphasis on religion and after life, thus starting a revolution in the field of art, which we today know as Renaissance.
Three eras of Renaissance Art period –
Renaissance Art evolution took place in three stages- Early Renaissance (1400-1475 AD), High Renaissance (1475-1525 AD) and Late Renaissance (1525-1600 AD).
Early Renaissance Art period
The artists of the early renaissance art period firmly believed that art can’t be static, it should developed further. Development and progress was integral to the evolution and survival of arts. The main artists during this early renaissance art period were sculptor Donatello, architect Filippo Brunelleschi, and painter Masaccio. Unlike the artists of the medieval period, who painted heavenly creatures, the focus of the artists shifted to the human body. They created realistic figures that portrayed personality and behavior of human being which gave the concept of Realism.
High Renaissance Art period
This era of the renaissance art period saw the trend of generalized style of art that focused on drama, physical presence and balance. Color and light, perspective, technical precision, imagination and composition were the characteristic of the paintings during this era. The major artists of this period were Leonardo Da Vinci, Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Titian. Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” paintings, Michelangelo and Raphael’s Vatican City paintings are the epitome of creativity that existed in this era.
Late Renaissance Art Period
The era of late Renaissance art period was also know as Mannerism as artist focused more on style or manner and less on the substance. The sack of Rome by the troops of Charles V in 1527 forced the artists to relocate to other artistic centers in Italy, France, and Spain. Prominent artists of this period included Giorgio Vasari and Giovanni da Bologna. Michelangelo was the artist of high Renaissance who continued painting during this period.
